Hey Lulurose -

thanks for all the info and the link - I'm looking forward to listening.

Well, Cil, I'm not clear about any of Mr. Cobert's co-writers. As far as I know he's the one credited for the music.

Here's a link to itunes, where you can hear some of the soundtrack of the series. He seemed to work with the creator of Dark Shadows, Dan Curtis, on much of Mr. Curtis' stuff.

Robert Cobert

The cast of DS was unique in more ways than one. Though soaps often had actors/actresses return to play another part-it usually was because either the performer wanted to leave, or they wrote the character off, and then they found that the audience like them, so that they brought them back. So, the great soap "tropes," of the long lost twin, or amazing coincidence of a lookalike who will then turn out to be some "up til now" unknown relative, came into being. The DS cast, though, was like an old time travelling troupe of players where the same people played different roles. They often played their own ancestors, or characters in alternate time lines.

Dark Shadows had been on several years when I started watching it. However, because I was in the central time zone, the show was over by the time I got home from school, because I had to ride the bus to and from school. I discovered one tv station, which showed both ABC and NBC programming, that showed DS thirty minutes after our closer ABC affiliated station. We had a tall tv antennae outside-and even then sometimes the reception was "iffy." So, I really only got to see the show during the summer, when it somehow-amazingly-wasn't on when my mother's own soaps were on(she watched the CBS' "soaps," as did my paternal grandmother-my maternal grandmother sadly died when my mom was thirteen from pneumonia, though I think she still listened to the original radio soaps, according to my mom.)

They introduced Quentin during the summer, which is why I have some memory of him. He was a malevolent ghost who haunted possessed David Collins, the one child who was on the series from the time it premiered until it was cancelled-and who was the same age I was, at the time-and was the one supernatural being in the whole history of the show to scare the entire family out of its ancestral home. Barnabas went back in time via some magical method and fixed the problem that led to Quentin's haunting-which I believe was because he'd been disinherited, and murdered(though I don't think that one caused the other.) So, he was still PO'd at the family in the afterlife, I believe. His character was popular, and went on to remain a fan fave, so a storyline was made to bring him into the modern storyline. Dark Shadows never met a previous story that they didn't like, and they supposedly at least referenced The Turn of the Screw for Quentin's ghost story, and then tweaked "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" story with a werewolf twist to it, which is how they explained his existence in the 20th century.

Barnabas and Quentin were distant cousins-Barnabas predated the Quentin character that his character interacted with the most by about a hundred years. They were alternately antagonists and allies-but in the modern era I think they were probably each other's closest relative, as well as friend. Some fans would probably argue that Barnabas and Dr. Julia Hoffman were best friends, at the least. Some fans "ship" them-in a weird way the relationship has some "Spuffy" tendencies, with Barnabas being in the "Buffy" role of not acknowledging things, and Julia as his long suffering, totally devoted "friend" who wanted more, though that was mostly earlier. However, the guy who was the main writer of the series, Sam Hall(who also happened to be the husband of the actress who played Julia)said in a TV Guide interview that, if the show had gotten to finish the way he had planned, that he had meant Barnabas to end up with Julia.

I would like to hear more music from the TV series - I actually do have Robert Cobert listed as the composer.

OK - so who is Quentin - I see now that my big mistake was thinking that Quentin was the original vampire character first introduced in the series.  That character is Barnabas and I made the big leap of error/assumption thinking that this music went with Barnabas.

After listening to both Quentin's Theme and Josette's Music Box I find that I don't care at all for the Quentin theme but love the Josette music box.

Heck, now I have to change it out over at you tube once I make the corrections -

What should I call the music I used?  If I go with Theme From Dark Shadows TV Series - and Robert Cobert as the composer, is that correct.  Looks like there were several composers for the TV series music.

Hey, Cil, don't worry about it. It was really sweet of you to include it. I think the guy who composed the music for Dark Shadows was named Robert Cobert, and he was able to do some really atmospheric stuff. I've read people say that they still get "creeped" out just hearing some of the music. The most "famous" of the music is the actual theme, Quentin's theme, and the music from Josette's music box-another very pretty little ditty. This music, too, always had storyline implications.

Lulurose - thanks ever for the clarification on the music - I took the information of a wikipage summary of info and I took it as the music that opened the series.  The music info of the Halloween music cd listed the composer as Herrmann and I had to search it out from this name.   It's my error, that I thought the series theme music was that which went with the Quentin's theme.

I will have to re-do the credit titles later - I'm too tired right now.  LOL, I had no idea that this was going to turn out so long, since I love graphics and posters it felt like I was working with just a little bit of time.

I highly recommend the music from Imago Mortis - it's a wonderful music film score.  I had no idea what it was, but La-La Land records had it on the super clearance sale several months ago and I purchased it along with another wonderful sound score of the George C. Scott-Susannah York "Jane Eyre" by John Williams.

The 2011 "Jane Eyre" also has a fabulous sound score by Dario Marianelli

I'm sorry I got the music credits wrong, but I was working from the "I want to get this done before Halloween ends" mode and I hurried my research - but I really wanted to include Dark Shadows just for Lulurose.

Wow, that's a LOT of nice movie posters! Good combination with the music. I'm glad you made it in time, Cil.

I hope all BuffyTubers had a nice Halloween.

I recorded Spider Baby off of TCM. I think you can see the whole movie on Youtube, though I'm not sure how good the quality might be.

Okay, forgive my inner geek, but the music you included-which was great and much appreciated, as mentioned-is actually the theme of the Dark Shadow's series. Quentin's Theme was a completely different tune composed for introducing the ghostly Quentin as a character-the song played on an old Victrola in a room haunted by Quentin in that particular story arc. It actually was a hit on the radio, at the time. It's very pretty-and definitely haunting. I think the actual title is Shadows of the Night.

Quentin's theme

Thanks for the new posters - I wish that I had them before so that I could have included them, especially the Dark Shadows film.  You may have mentioned a DS film before, but I did not think to look for a poster as I only know of it as a TV series.  I love the Quentin's theme music; it was perfect for this.

Now I have to look for Spider Baby - love the play off baby jane.

Great compilation vid, Cil. You included Dark Shadows! :)

Speaking of Dark Shadows, here's the poster for the first DS movie.

Also, for Halloween, I recorded and watched the really weird, black comedy, Spider Baby.

The most recognizable person in this film, at the time, was Lon Chaney, Jr. I recognized the blond actress as having played a character on Start Trek a few years later.

Another person in the film, Sid Haig, has gone onto cult status in the horror genre for playing such demented characters, mainly in Rob Zombie movies-which I have no stomach for, literally, as they are just too gruesome and gross. He shows in this movie that he can play "over the top" very well.

Useless trivia(or just more of it)-I discovered the other day that there was a character on Dark Shadows named Buffie.

That's exactly how I see Angel and Spike relationship. Maybe it's a bit unconventional, but I really took it from the canon! Updated version of the previously posted vid with some fixes (aspect ratio mostly).
